European Commission announces 20 million euros in humanitarian aid for Turkey in 2026

On Monday, the European Commission announced a 20 million euro humanitarian aid package for Turkey for the year 2026. The funding aims to support vulnerable refugees and their host communities, as Turkey continues to host approximately 2.3 million registered refugees, primarily from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran. European Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib stated that while many refugees access basic services, hundreds of thousands remain vulnerable due to socioeconomic challenges and the aftermath of the 2023 earthquakes. This new allocation remains level with 2025 funding but represents a decrease from the 24 million euros provided in 2024. Commissioner Lahbib noted that the EU has contributed over 3.5 billion euros in humanitarian aid to Turkey since 2012. The assistance is distributed through humanitarian organizations to ensure access to essential services. The initiative aims to alleviate the burden on host communities while providing aid to those most in need.
