Paphos municipality renames Kemal Ataturk street sparking reactions in northern Cyprus

The Paphos Municipal Council recently decided to rename a street in the Moutallos area, replacing the name "Kemal Ataturk" with "Nikos Kapetanidis." This decision has been met with strong opposition from Turkish Cypriot leadership. Unal Ustel, the leader of the National Unity Party and head of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, described the move as a hostile act that contradicts the Greek Cypriot side's stated goals of peace and reconciliation. Former Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar also condemned the action, asserting that it lacks the mutual respect required for peaceful coexistence. Turkish Cypriot officials argued that such actions, alongside demands to remove the TRNC flag from the Pentadaktylos mountain range, undermine inter-communal trust. They claimed that these decisions reveal an underlying bias against Turkish identity and symbols. In response, Turkish Cypriot leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining their cultural values, flag, and statehood, while calling for reciprocity regarding the respect of symbols and religious sites on both sides.
