Farmers and residents protest against livestock burial in Paliometocho

On Monday, May 11, livestock farmers and local residents blocked roads in the Paliometocho area, Nicosia district, to protest the planned burial of culled livestock. The animals were euthanized as part of disease management measures related to foot-and-mouth disease. Reports indicate that veterinary services intended to transport approximately 170 culled cows to the site, located about 16 kilometers from the original farm. Protesters claim this action violates European Union protocols, which supposedly mandate that burial should occur near the farm of origin to prevent disease spread. Concerns were also raised regarding a nearby pig farm, which protesters fear is now at risk of infection. Excavation work at the burial site reportedly began on Saturday afternoon. Authorities have not yet issued a formal response addressing the specific safety concerns raised by the demonstrators.
