Cyprus public sector employment data for April 2026

In April 2026, total public sector employment in Cyprus reached 55,571, marking a marginal year-on-year increase of 81 people or 0.1%. Data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus shows that the education sector saw the largest growth, rising by 1.7% to 18,693 employees. Conversely, employment in the civil service decreased by 1.0% to 23,122 personnel. The security forces remained relatively stable at 13,756 employees, despite a significant 86.9% decline in fixed-term staff. This sharp reduction in fixed-term security personnel is attributed to the expiration and non-renewal of specific contracts initiated in July 2025. Overall, permanent staff numbers rose by 0.3% to 32,949. Indefinite-term employees in the education sector experienced the highest growth, increasing by 24.8% to 1,182. For the period from January to April 2026, average state employment saw a total increase of 0.2%.
