Trial begins for medical negligence case in Nicosia

A significant criminal trial regarding medical negligence has commenced in a Nicosia court, nearly six years after an incident in October 2020. Eight patients suffered blindness following cataract surgeries performed at a private hospital in the capital. The prosecution is represented by Elena Konstantinou, while two ophthalmologists are defended by Marios Spyrou. The court has scheduled eight hearings through June 5 to accelerate the proceedings, which have faced significant delays. A nurse who was present in the operating room is expected to provide key testimony regarding the handling of medical equipment and materials. In addition to the criminal proceedings, legal representatives for the victims and their families have filed civil lawsuits. The testimony is expected to clarify the procedures followed during the surgeries. This case remains one of the most prominent instances of medical malpractice addressed by the Cypriot justice system.
