Death of veteran sports journalist Dimitris Dimitriou

Dimitris Dimitriou, a prominent sports journalist and former vice-president of the Cyprus Sports Journalists Association, passed away on May 11, 2026. He was 65 or 66 years old, following a long struggle with cancer. Dimitriou began his career in 1981 at the newspaper Simerini in Athens before returning to Cyprus in 1983. He served as the sports editor-in-chief at the newspaper Politis from 1999 until his retirement at the end of 2020. Throughout his career, he also worked for Radio Proto and was instrumental in the early days of free radio broadcasting. His recent book, 'With the Gods of Olympus', was supported by the Cyprus Football Association. He passed away peacefully with his daughter, Theodora, by his side. Various sports organizations, including APOEL and the Cyprus Sports Organization, issued official statements honoring his significant contributions to the profession.
