Cypriot sports journalist Dimitris Dimitriou dies at 65

Dimitris Dimitriou, a prominent figure in Cypriot sports journalism and former vice president of the Cyprus Sports Journalists Association (EAK), passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 65. His death followed a multi-year battle with cancer, which he faced until his final moments alongside his daughter, Theodora. Dimitriou began his journalistic career in 1981 at the newspaper Simerini in Athens. He returned to Cyprus in 1983 to continue working for the same publication, eventually transitioning from general reporting to the sports department. Throughout his professional life, he also contributed to Radio Proto, where he pioneered early football radio broadcasting. In 1999, he joined the newspaper Politis as sports editor-in-chief, a position he held until his departure at the end of 2020. The Cyprus Sports Journalists Association officially announced his death, mourning the loss of a mentor and a dedicated professional.
