Cypriot sports journalist Demetris Demetriou passes away at 65

Cypriot sports journalist Demetris Demetriou passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 65, following a long battle with cancer. Most sources confirm his age as 65, while one report cites 66. Demetriou, son of sports reporter Andreas Pafitis, began his career in Athens in 1981 before returning to Cyprus in 1983 to work for the newspaper Simerini. He later served as sports editor-in-chief at Politis from 1999 until 2020. Throughout his career, he was a prominent figure in the Union of Cyprus Sports Reporters (EAK), serving as vice president from 2001 to 2018. He was also an active member of the Union of Cyprus Journalists since 1985. In his final years, he published the book 'Me tous Theous tou Olympou', with proceeds donated to the sports journalists' solidarity fund. He leaves behind his daughter, Theodora, and a legacy as a mentor to generations of journalists.
