Oroklini coastal promenade sections closed due to erosion and structural concerns

A portion of the Oroklini coastal promenade, near the outdoor gym, has been closed to the public following structural safety concerns caused by severe coastal erosion. Erosion has extended to adjacent hotel grounds, leading to the formation of sinkholes in at least one property's lawn. Architects Margarita Danou and Sevina Floridou, who designed the promenade in the early 2000s, have refuted claims that their design caused the instability. Instead, they attributed the issues to unauthorized private interventions in the beach zone, a lack of regular maintenance, and the impact of uncontrolled vehicle traffic. Experts have suggested that the removal of a perpendicular breakwater and the subsequent installation of parallel breakwaters may have contributed to the disappearance of the original 25-meter-wide sandy beach and the resulting erosion. The promenade, which won the State Architecture Award in 2004 and appeared in international publications, was extended toward the Lebay Hotel, while plans for a third phase reaching the former refinery area remain suspended. The architects maintain the project was designed to respect sensitive coastal dynamics.
