Two individuals arrested in Nicosia for counterfeit currency
Police in Nicosia arrested a 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman in connection with the possession and circulation of counterfeit banknotes. The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 AM when the man attempted to pay for goods at a kiosk using a suspicious 200-euro note. Upon inspection, officers confirmed the note appeared to be counterfeit and arrested the suspect. A subsequent search of his vehicle, where the 19-year-old woman was found sitting in the passenger seat, yielded 17 packs of cigarettes and 300 euros in 50-euro bills. A following search at their shared residence in Nicosia led to the discovery of an additional 1,760 euros, including five more 200-euro notes suspected to be fake. The woman was initially arrested for illegal possession of property as she could not verify the origin of the money. Both suspects were later re-arrested under judicial warrants to facilitate the ongoing police investigation.
