UK deploys HMS Dragon to the Middle East for Strait of Hormuz security

The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of the destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of preparatory measures for a multinational coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of Defence confirmed on May 9, 2026, that the vessel's presence aims to support commercial shipping confidence and facilitate future demining operations once hostilities conclude. This mission is part of a joint defensive planning effort led by the UK and France, following discussions with over 44 nations in London this past April. Reports indicate that approximately 40 countries have agreed to participate in this freedom of navigation initiative. The HMS Dragon was previously deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean in March to assist with the defense of Cyprus. The deployment is timed to coincide with French naval movements in the southern Red Sea to stabilize maritime trade routes.
