Cyprus commemorates Europe Day and announces 93 academic scholarships

Cyprus marked Europe Day on May 9, 2026, celebrating the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. Official events included a flag-raising ceremony at the old Nicosia town hall and a themed event titled 'Youth at the heart of an autonomous Union' held at the Presidential Palace. During the ceremony, President Nikos Christodoulides announced that six Cypriot universities—the University of Cyprus, University of Nicosia, Frederick University, University of Limassol, UCLAN Cyprus, and Neapolis University Pafos—are offering 93 scholarships, comprising four full and 89 partial awards for the 2026-2027 academic year. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos emphasized the EU's role as an answer to current challenges, while Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna highlighted Cyprus's responsibility as the rotating Council of the EU presidency holder. Minister of Education Athina Michaelidou noted the country's focus on creating an inclusive, high-quality European education space. Celebrations also took place in Larnaca at a designated 'European Village' event featuring cultural and educational activities. The initiatives aim to promote European integration, strategic autonomy, and increased support for the younger generation.
