U.S. military strike in the eastern Pacific results in two deaths
On May 8, 2026, the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) conducted a kinetic strike against a vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The operation was authorized by General Francis L. Donovan and carried out by Joint Task Force Southern Spear. According to the U.S. military, the vessel was linked to designated terrorist organizations and was operating on known drug trafficking routes. The strike resulted in two confirmed fatalities, with one survivor reported. SOUTHCOM released a 10-second video of the incident as part of their anti-narcotics campaign. Reports indicate that this incident brings the total death toll of such operations since September 2025 to at least 192 people. While the U.S. characterizes the targets as drug traffickers associated with terrorist groups, the scale of the campaign remains significant with nearly 200 casualties reported to date.
