AKEL general secretary addresses anti-fascism and upcoming parliamentary elections

Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of the AKEL party, held a commemoration event at the World War II monument in Nicosia to mark the anniversary of the anti-fascist victory on May 9th. During his speech, Stefanou warned against the contemporary rise of fascism, neo-Nazism, and the extreme right, drawing parallels between current social conditions and those in pre-war Germany. Separately, at a party concert held at the Tassos Papadopoulos-Eleftheria Stadium, Stefanou addressed the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for May 24th. He characterized this as a critical electoral battle for the party, which is celebrating its centenary. The General Secretary urged voters to support AKEL, framing the election as a choice between the interests of the majority of society versus those of a privileged minority. He criticized the current socio-economic status in Cyprus, alleging that inequality and social injustice are widening. Stefanou emphasized the party's commitment to strengthening the welfare state and advocating for workers' rights and dignity.
