Recent wildfires in Paphos and the Nicosia buffer zone

On Saturday, May 9, 2026, two fires occurred in the Paphos district. The first started at 13:45 in Ineia, near the Ayiasmos location, and was contained by 14:20 by six Forestry Department personnel. The second broke out at 15:15 in the Faraklos area of Neo Chorio and was controlled by 15:40. Additionally, on May 9, a fire was reported in the buffer zone near Kaimakli and Aglantzia, following a previous blaze in the same area on May 8. Multiple firefighting units, including the Fire Service, Forestry Department, and Civil Defense, participated in containing the buffer zone fire to prevent it from spreading into government-controlled areas. Authorities are currently investigating the causes of these fires. Some reports and social media footage highlighted concerns regarding response times and public involvement in the Kaimakli area.
