Broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough turns 100

Naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough is celebrating his 100th birthday. Attenborough began his career at the BBC in the early 1950s after working as a textbook editor. His work spans over 70 years and includes landmark series such as the 1979 documentary Life on Earth, which featured his famous encounter with mountain gorillas. Throughout his career, he has documented environmental themes, including the 2012 account of Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island tortoise. The BBC is marking the milestone with a special concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Tributes have been issued from global figures, including the British royal family and Barack Obama. Attenborough expressed surprise at the scale of the public recognition, stating he had originally hoped to mark the day quietly. He continues to be a prominent advocate for environmental protection and conservation efforts.
