Cyprus hosts European high-level conference on disability rights
The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union is hosting a series of events in Limassol focused on disability rights and independent living. During a high-level conference, European Commissioner for Equality, Hadja Lahbib, presented the newly adopted Enhanced European Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities until 2030. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Klea Papaellina, emphasized that independent living is a fundamental right and a priority for the state. A session of the European Disability Platform was held on May 8, marking its first meeting outside Brussels. The program includes the Annual General Meeting of the European Disability Forum and discussions on community-based support services. The events are supported by the European Social Fund+. Officials from Ireland, Spain, and Malta participated to share best practices in promoting social inclusion and autonomy.
