Investigation into military sea drone discovered in Lefkada
On May 8, 2026, local fishermen discovered an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) in a sea cave near Cape Doukato in Lefkada, Greece. The drone was equipped with approximately 100 to 200 kilograms of explosives and three detonators. Specialized Hellenic Armed Forces units neutralized the explosives through a controlled detonation near Astakos. The device, which some reports suggest is a Ukrainian-made Magura V3 model, has been transferred to naval facilities in Elefsina for technical analysis by the military and the National Intelligence Service (EYP). Authorities are investigating its origins, as it was found with its engine running and, according to some reports, included handwritten notes in Ukrainian. Two primary theories are being examined: either the drone was deployed from a vessel for future use against Russian 'shadow fleet' tankers in the Mediterranean, or it suffered a navigation failure and drifted off course. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that the military is aware of the device's nature and is working to enhance domestic capabilities regarding advanced drone and anti-drone systems.
