Nikolaideio Gymnasium of Paphos wins first prize in European ancient theater competition
The Nikolaideio Gymnasium of Paphos and the Music School of Kastoria were jointly awarded the first prize at the 1st European Student Competition for Ancient Theater, held in Avella, Italy. The competition featured 21 schools from Greece and Cyprus and was organized by the non-profit organization ELEKPRO. The Paphos school presented Aristophanes' comedy 'The Birds' at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Avella. As part of the award, the organizers will fund the construction of a small ancient Greek-style theater on the school's premises. Andreas Petrou, president of the Parent Association, noted that the achievement is particularly significant as the school has been housed in the Lyceum of Kykkos for 15 years without its own dedicated facility. The event occurred in two phases, with the final stages taking place between April 22 and April 26, 2026. Representatives of the parents described the lack of independent infrastructure as unjust given the school's historical significance.
