Sweden and Ukraine discuss potential purchase of Gripen fighter jets

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson and Ukrainian Minister Mykhailo Fedorov held a joint press conference in Stockholm to discuss the potential acquisition of Saab-manufactured Gripen fighter jets. The countries signed a letter of intent last year exploring the supply of up to 150 aircraft to modernize the Ukrainian air force for the post-war period. Minister Jonson confirmed that negotiations are progressing well and stated that a final agreement could potentially be reached this year. While the procurement remains a priority, the central challenge involves securing funding for the significant purchase. Minister Fedorov indicated that Ukraine has developed a financing plan and suggested an announcement could follow within a few months. The CEO of Saab previously expressed hopes for a deal this year following the resolution of EU financial hurdles, including Hungary's lifting of its veto on a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine. Both parties remain in active dialogue to finalize the terms of this defense cooperation.
