Gender Equality Commissioner reports low female representation in parliamentary elections

Cyprus Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, stated that women comprise only 29.7% of candidates for the 2026 parliamentary elections. Despite women representing 50% of the national population, this figure indicates a persistent deficit in political participation. Christodoulou emphasized that balanced legislative representation is essential for creating laws that address the diverse needs of society. Her office has previously engaged with political party leaders and the National Machinery for Women's Rights to advocate for concrete measures supporting female candidates, particularly for winnable positions. The Commissioner expressed dissatisfaction that current candidate lists do not yet reflect societal expectations. She called for increased efforts to support women in politics, citing equality as a social imperative. Christodoulou hopes that the electorate's final decision will result in a more representative parliament.
