New DNA evidence emerges in the 2007 Garlasco murder case
Chiara Poggi, a 26-year-old economics graduate, was found dead in her home in Garlasco, near Milan, on August 13, 2007. She had suffered at least 12 blunt-force injuries to her head and face. Alberto Stasi, her former partner, was definitively convicted of the murder in 2015 after two initial acquittals and is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence, despite maintaining his innocence. The case has been reopened following the discovery of DNA traces under the victim's fingernails that match Andrea Sempio, a friend of the victim's brother. While initial reinvestigation theories suggested Sempio might have had accomplices including Stasi, prosecutors now believe Sempio acted alone. Sempio, who denies the allegations, has been summoned for questioning. These developments have raised the possibility of a judicial miscarriage and a potential reversal of Stasi's conviction.
