Religious group representatives elected unopposed in Cyprus
On May 24, Cyprus will hold elections for the representative of the Maronite religious group, following the submission of two candidacies from former DISY MP Marios Mavrides and accountant Petros Nakouzis. They are competing to succeed outgoing representative Giannakis Mousas. Conversely, the representatives for the Latin and Armenian communities were elected unopposed. Antonella Lydia Mantovani was officially declared the representative for the Latins, a role she has held since June 2016. Vartkes Mahdessian was declared the representative for the Armenians, continuing his tenure which began in 2006. The three religious group representatives serve five-year terms. While they participate in the Parliamentary Committee on Education and attend plenary sessions to advocate for their communities, they do not possess voting rights. They are entitled to the same parliamentary privileges as elected members of the House of Representatives, including immunity and compensation.
