Copernicus report identifies 2025 as the third warmest year globally
The European State of the Climate 2025 report, published by the Copernicus Climate Change Service and the World Meteorological Organization, ranks 2025 as the third warmest year on record globally. Europe is warming at twice the global average rate, with the Mediterranean identified as a highly vulnerable climate change hotspot. In Cyprus, extreme weather events included a record-breaking heatwave in late July 2025. Meteorological data recorded a temperature of 46.1°C in Lefkara on July 27, while Athalassa reached 44.7°C on July 24, the highest July temperature since measurements began in 1983. Additionally, July 2025 saw the most destructive forest fire in the island's history. These findings highlight the increasing frequency of heatwaves, tropical nights, and prolonged droughts expected across the region.
