Investigation into alleged medical supply fraud within the GHS

The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) of Cyprus is investigating a supplier for allegedly defrauding the General Healthcare System (GHS). The supplier was contracted to provide specific orthopedic consumables but reportedly delivered non-approved products from a different manufacturer. The discrepancy was identified during routine digital audits within the GHS information system, which revealed inconsistencies in labeling and batch numbers. Subsequent on-site inspections at hospitals confirmed the misuse of products that had not been evaluated or authorized by the HIO. In response, the HIO terminated its contract with the supplier and removed the company's products from the list of reimbursable hospital consumables. Doctors and medical facilities have been instructed to switch to alternative, authorized suppliers. The case has been referred to the police for further investigation. The HIO is currently conducting a broader audit to determine if this practice extended to other products provided by the same company.
