Individual fined 40,000 euros for smuggling fuel from occupied territories

On May 6, 2026, authorities in Cyprus intercepted a 54-year-old Greek Cypriot driving a truck emerging from the buffer zone in the Dali/Idali area. Customs officers discovered a metal tank containing 9 tons of diesel fuel originating from the occupied areas. Additionally, the truck contained 80 liters of gasoline in four containers and 54 liters of engine oil in three containers. The driver was arrested for the illegal transport of goods. Authorities seized both the fuel and the vehicle used in the operation. During the investigation, the individual admitted to the charges. The case was resolved through an out-of-court settlement, requiring the payment of 40,000 euros for the release of the vehicle and the settlement of the offenses. The individual was subsequently released.
