Iran football federation sets conditions for 2026 World Cup participation

Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), has expressed concerns regarding the participation of the Iranian national team in the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Tensions rose after a delegation led by Taj was denied entry to Canada during a recent FIFA conference in Vancouver, with the Canadian immigration minister confirming the cancellation of his visa due to his alleged ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC is designated as a terrorist organization by both Canada and the United States. In response, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström expressed regret over the incident and invited the Iranian delegation to a meeting in Zurich, scheduled to take place by May 20. Taj has asserted that FIFA should remain independent of American political influence and has demanded respect for the IRGC. While some reports state that participation is still being negotiated, other sources claim that FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed Iran's presence at the tournament. The Iranian side has requested guarantees regarding player safety, the absence of political interference, and the recognition of their national symbols.
