Audit office expands investigation into Paphos landfill management

The Audit Office of the Republic of Cyprus has officially expanded its ongoing investigation into Paphos municipality to include the Paphos Landfill (XYTA). The probe follows a request from the council of the landfill, which previously operated under the chairmanship of suspended Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos until February. Auditor General Andreas Papakonstantinou has ordered a comprehensive review of all decisions and management practices regarding the facility. The investigation is centered on court-ordered compensation payments to the company Helector. Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou was recently informed that the municipality faces a liability of approximately 400,000 euros for waste management issues, a matter he reportedly was unaware of before taking office. Additionally, current landfill officials have noted a separate court order from the Paphos District Court exceeding 636,000 euros. The inquiry aims to clarify the financial obligations and administrative handling of these waste management contracts.
