Trial proceedings begin for a 38-year-old accused of assaulting a referee
The Larnaca District Court has begun proceedings against a 38-year-old man accused of violence at a sports venue and assaulting a referee. The incident occurred on May 2, 2026, during a football match between Rotsidis Mammari and APOP Parekklisia at the Psevdas Community Stadium in Larnaca. The defendant, who was previously in police custody, faces charges under legislation concerning the prevention and suppression of violence in sports. During the hearing, the court ordered the defendant to be released until the next trial date, which is set for June 16, 2026. While some sources mention a bail requirement of 5,000 euros, others refer generally to conditions ensuring his presence. Furthermore, the court issued an order banning the individual from all sports venues until the case concludes. Reports also indicate the defendant was a candidate for the United Cypriot Hunters Movement in the 2026 parliamentary elections, but was subsequently removed from the party list following the event.
