Police in Paphos investigate a 48,000 euro phishing scam related to Gesy

The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department is investigating a significant online fraud case involving a 60-year-old victim. On April 28, 2026, the victim received an SMS appearing to originate from the General Healthcare System (Gesy), claiming his profile required an urgent update. The message contained a link to a fraudulent website where the victim was prompted to enter his personal details and bank account information. Under the false pretense of paying a fee to complete the profile upgrade, the perpetrators gained access to his accounts. Following the submission of these details, 48,000 euros were illicitly withdrawn from the victim's bank account. The case is currently being handled by the Economic Crime Investigation Office of the Paphos Police. The Health Insurance Organization has issued a reminder that it never requests passwords, payment details, or personal information via SMS. Authorities advise the public to verify communications through official channels and to avoid interacting with suspicious links.
