UN committee expresses concern over citizenship access for children of mixed marriages in Cyprus
The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination issued a report on May 1, 2026, addressing obstacles faced by children of mixed marriages in Cyprus. The term specifically refers to children born from unions between Turkish Cypriots and Turkish settlers. The committee recommended that the government of the Republic of Cyprus remove discriminatory barriers preventing these individuals from obtaining citizenship. Tufan Erhurman, a Turkish Cypriot politician, highlighted these findings in a social media statement. He noted that similar concerns were raised by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights several months prior. Erhurman argued that current policies regarding EU citizenship for these children are unacceptable from a human rights perspective. He affirmed his commitment to pursuing these issues on all available platforms to ensure equality. The report serves as a formal international call for policy revisions concerning the legal status of this demographic.
