Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addresses AI-generated deepfake images
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently denounced the circulation of AI-generated deepfake images that portrayed her in lingerie. These images, which were shared on social media and platforms like X, were identified by the Prime Minister as a form of cyberbullying. While Meloni initially responded with irony regarding the quality of the edits, she emphasized that the incident highlights a serious threat posed by digital misinformation. The controversy follows a broader scandal involving a pornographic website that shared altered images of various prominent Italian women, including opposition leader Elly Schlein. In response to such digital threats, Italy enacted a comprehensive law last September that regulates artificial intelligence and mandates criminal penalties for malicious use of the technology. The government states this legislation aligns with broader European Union standards for AI regulation. Despite the legislation, the proliferation of non-consensual altered images remains a significant point of concern for the Italian administration.
