Vienna police prepare for protests during Eurovision
Vienna police have identified the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest as a major security challenge due to anticipated protests surrounding Israel's participation. Authorities expect at least 3,000 protesters to attend rallies next week, with potential for unauthorized demonstrations and blockades, particularly on the day of the final. Police official Xenia Zauner noted that both pro-Israel and anti-Israel groups have announced their intentions to gather. The atmosphere is tense as five national broadcasters, including Spain's RTVE and Ireland's RTE, have decided to boycott the event in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza that began after the October 2023 Hamas attacks. Further geopolitical tensions involving Iran have contributed to the heightening of security concerns. Demonstrations must be registered with at least 48 hours' notice, though the police remain prepared for spontaneous actions. The timing of the event also coincides with the anniversary of the Nakba on May 15.
