AKEL general secretary submits candidacies for Nicosia legislative elections
General Secretary of the AKEL party, Stefanos Stefanou, officially submitted the party's candidacy list for the Nicosia district ahead of the May 24 legislative elections. Stefanou stated that the party's primary goal is to achieve a stronger presence in the House of Representatives. He emphasized that the country and society face significant challenges, specifically high inflation and the rising cost of living. The party critiqued the current government, arguing that its measures to address economic crises are insufficient and prioritize major interests, banks, and the wealthy. In contrast, AKEL proposes increasing the minimum wage, extending the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to all private sector employees, and strengthening collective bargaining agreements. Stefanou framed his party as a necessary force to protect workers, pensioners, and young people, expressing confidence that voters would acknowledge the party's 100-year history of social advocacy. The party leaders characterized the public's dissatisfaction with the economic situation as understandable and called for political changes to better serve the majority.
