Democratic Rally party outlines defense policy ahead of elections

The Democratic Rally (DISY) party, represented by its government monitoring coordinator Michalis Ioannidis, has released its strategic defense proposals 19 days before the parliamentary elections. The party emphasizes the need for consistency and measurable goals in national defense, rejecting populist slogans. Key financial goals include utilizing €1.18 billion in European funding for the 2026–2030 period to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030. DISY credits its previous initiatives for strengthening Cyprus's international standing, including the lifting of the U.S. arms embargo and participation in the PESCO program. The party advocates for continued cooperation with Greece, France, the United States, and Israel. Furthermore, it proposes further developing the domestic defense industry and aligning with NATO standards. DISY also highlights the ongoing modernization of the National Guard and its transition toward a semi-professional military structure.
