Electricity Authority of Cyprus updates on supply and Eurostat reports price reductions
Giorgos Petrou, Chairman of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), stated that electricity prices will not decrease until the authority installs large-scale photovoltaic parks. The EAC aims to install new generators by 2028 to ensure grid stability for the coming years. Although generation increased by 80 megawatts this year, Petrou warned that some generators are over 40 years old, making system reliability dependent on current maintenance and the functioning of existing substations. Meanwhile, Eurostat data released in the second half of 2025 shows that Cyprus recorded the largest reduction in household electricity prices in the European Union, falling by 14.7% compared to the same period in 2024. The average price in Cyprus reached 30.37 euros per 100 kWh. In contrast, other EU nations like Romania, Austria, and Ireland saw significant price hikes. EU-wide average prices remained stable at 28.96 euros per 100 kWh, though they remain higher than pre-2022 energy crisis levels.
