SupportCY expands fire prevention operations in Cyprus
The SupportCY initiative, backed by the Bank of Cyprus, has integrated unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) into its operational framework to assist the Fire Service with early fire detection. The Drone Unit was established in early 2026 and utilizes certified operators to provide real-time surveillance across the island. Additionally, a new Helicopter Support Unit has been formed, which uses specialized inflatable water tanks to facilitate the refueling of firefighting helicopters. The organization has recently conducted four local and two nationwide readiness exercises to ensure coordination between volunteer units and state services. Training programs for new and existing volunteers in fire prevention and recovery are currently nearing completion. These measures are intended to address the heightened risk of fires during the current summer season. This expansion of aerial capabilities is designed to improve response times and risk management throughout Cyprus.
