Implementation of the new EES border control system in Europe
The European Union has introduced the Entry-Exit System (EES) to monitor travelers from outside the EU. This system replaces traditional passport stamping with electronic registration at airports, ports, and train stations. Non-EU visitors must now provide biometric data, including facial scans and fingerprints, during their first entry. This data will be stored and used for future identity verification before subsequent travels. The system covers 29 European countries where border checks between members are typically omitted. While initial reports mention an April 10 implementation, the system is scheduled for full operational functionality across all external border checkpoints by April 10, 2026. This transition marks a significant shift toward digital border management for the Schengen area and associated nations.
