IMO session concludes with focus on global maritime decarbonization

The 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84) took place in London from April 27 to May 1, 2026. Member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed to continue intensive consultations to establish a global framework for maritime decarbonization. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) officially welcomed this outcome as a significant step toward addressing industry challenges. Alexandros Josephides, General Manager of the CSC, participated in the session as part of the Cypriot delegation under the Shipping Deputy Ministry. The chamber emphasized that future negotiations must focus on creating a practical, effective, and globally applicable regulatory framework. Stakeholders expressed a desire for continued cooperation to ensure a level playing field for the global shipping industry. The goal is to reach a realistic agreement that balances environmental objectives with operational feasibility. No final agreement was signed, but the commitment to ongoing dialogue was formally reaffirmed by the participants.
