Overview of Burano island in the Venetian lagoon
Burano is an island located within the Venetian lagoon archipelago in Italy. The island is known for its brightly colored houses, which are painted in various shades of blue, green, red, and yellow. There are two primary theories regarding the origin of these colors: one suggests fishermen painted their homes to identify them during foggy weather, while another claims women used leftover paint to repair peeling walls. With a population of approximately 2,270 residents, Burano is internationally recognized for its traditional lace-making industry. The local culture also features specific culinary traditions, most notably the production of butter biscuits known as Bussolai. These biscuits, made from flour, sugar, eggs, and spices, are shaped into circles or the letter S and have historical significance as long-lasting provisions. The island remains a significant tourist destination in the region.
