Trial of Paolo Falzone begins in Belgium following 2022 carnival crash

The trial of 38-year-old Paolo Falzone has begun in Mons, Belgium, regarding a 2022 vehicular incident that resulted in seven deaths. On March 20, 2022, at 5 a.m., Falzone drove into a group of participants preparing for a carnival parade in Strépy-Bracquegnies, a suburb of La Louvière. During the proceedings, the defendant admitted to frequently recording himself driving at excessive speeds and expressed remorse for his actions. Approximately 200 families have filed as civil parties in the case. Investigators previously noted that Falzone often used his vehicle to exert a sense of power. Reports indicate he was traveling at approximately 170 kilometers per hour at the time of the incident while returning from a night out with a passenger. The judicial process is expected to continue until late June.
