European Commission responds to US tariff threats on vehicles
European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier addressed recent threats from US President Donald Trump regarding the imposition of 25% tariffs on European vehicles and trucks. Regnier emphasized that the European Union remains a reliable partner committed to the implementation of the joint EU-US declaration, often referred to as the Turnberry agreement. He noted that the EU is following established legislative procedures in cooperation with the European Parliament and the Council to fulfill its obligations. While maintaining a calm stance, the Commission stated that it is seeking clarity from the US side through ongoing communications. Regnier warned that the EU is keeping all options open, including potential protective measures, should the US take actions incompatible with the joint declaration. The official declined to provide specific details on potential countermeasures, such as the Anti-Coercion Instrument, noting that it is premature to speculate. The EU insists that its priority is to ensure the agreement benefits citizens and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
