EU and US trade talks continue amid disputes over automotive tariffs

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic recently held a six-hour trilateral dialogue with US officials regarding trade tariff regulations, though no final agreement was reached. The current tension arises from US President Donald Trump's threat to increase tariffs on European automobiles and trucks from 15% to 25%, accusing Brussels of failing to honor the July 2025 trade agreement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asserted that the EU remains committed to the deal, noting that the EU is prepared for any scenario if the US proceeds with the tariff hikes. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that all options remain on the table, including the activation of the EU's anti-coercion instrument (ACI). EU Commission spokesperson Thomas Reynier emphasized that the EU is working through established legislative procedures to implement its obligations and is seeking clarity from Washington. Brussels continues to engage in diplomatic efforts while warning that it will protect European interests if US actions are inconsistent with their joint declaration.
