Researcher releases historical photo of 1974 prisoner of war in Cyprus
Researcher Odysseas Christou has published a previously unseen photograph from the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, depicting a blindfolded and bound Greek Cypriot National Guard reserve soldier. The image, which shows the prisoner standing near a distinctive black Mercedes, is being used as evidence in an ongoing investigation regarding the identity of the captive, referred to as the 'Giant Prisoner of 1974'. Christou suggests the scene took place near the Agios Dimitrios chapel in the Mandres Kaimakliou area, south of Mia Milia village. Some social media users and preliminary reports speculate that the man might be missing person Makis Sergidis, who was reportedly captured after leaving his post to feed horses. While the researcher notes that circumstances point toward this identity, he emphasizes that no definitive proof has been confirmed yet. Christou has appealed for public testimonies and additional material to clarify the events and identify the figures in the photograph. The investigation continues as family members of missing persons are consulted.
