Diko proposes unified legislation for building safety
On Monday, Diko President Nikolas Papadopoulos announced a legislative initiative aimed at consolidating regulations for hazardous and common-use buildings in Cyprus. During a visit to various state services in Limassol, including the Provincial Self-Government Organization (EOA), the Department of Labor, and the Land Registry, Papadopoulos identified the fragmentation of administrative services as a primary cause of building safety issues. He argued that the current legal framework leaves gaps in oversight and accountability. The proposed legislation intends to grant specific powers and resources to the EOA to effectively monitor and regulate building safety. Papadopoulos emphasized that the issue requires adequate staffing, budgetary support, and clear legal authority. He stated that this proposal should be a priority for the incoming House of Representatives. The initiative follows recent incidents involving dangerous building conditions that have highlighted the need for systemic reform.
