Nomination process for 2026 parliamentary elections begins in Cyprus

On May 6, 2026, political candidates in Cyprus submitted their registrations for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for May 24, 2026. Approximately 745 to 750 individuals representing 18 political parties are competing for the 56 seats in the House of Representatives. The nomination process took place between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at designated locations in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta, and Kyrenia. Candidates representing the Maronite, Armenian, and Latin religious groups filed their papers with the Ministry of Interior in Nicosia. Assistant Chief Returning Officer Menelaos Vasiliou confirmed that all logistical preparations were complete. Authorities are currently reviewing legal inquiries regarding candidate eligibility, including a letter submitted by DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos concerning potential disqualifications. Under Article 64 of the Constitution, candidates must be at least 21 years old and possess a clean criminal record regarding electoral or moral offenses.
