Cyprus dam levels reach 39.6 percent as rainfall continues
As of Monday, May 4, 2026, the Water Development Department (WDD) reported that Cyprus dam reservoirs are at 39.6 percent capacity, holding 115.2 million cubic meters of water. This marks a significant increase from the 23 percent level recorded on the same date last year. Chief technical engineer Marios Hadjicostis noted that while current inflows are satisfactory for the season, they are steady rather than rapid. The Southern Conveyor system reservoirs hold 67 million cubic meters, or 35.5 percent capacity, while Paphos district dams are at 43.5 percent. Recent rainfall across the Troodos mountain range added over 1.3 million cubic meters of water in three days, with projections suggesting total annual inflows will exceed 100 million cubic meters by Tuesday. Additionally, the Mavrokolympos dam in Pegeia, which was drained for repairs in late 2024, has recovered to approximately 89.8 percent capacity due to rainfall and desalinated water supplementation. Authorities anticipate that reservoir levels will continue to rise for at least another two weeks.
