EU fisheries ministers discuss common fisheries policy in Nicosia

EU fisheries ministers met in Nicosia under the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU to conduct a policy debate on the evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The meeting was chaired by Cyprus's Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, with the participation of EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis. The evaluation covers the period from 2014 to 2025, marking the first comprehensive review since the 2013 reform. Commissioner Kadis reported that while overfishing has decreased and sustainable stock levels have risen from 50% in 2014 to 63% currently, the evaluation highlighted structural weaknesses such as regulatory complexity and administrative burdens. Ministers emphasized the need for simplifying rules, enhancing competitiveness, and balancing environmental, economic, and social objectives. Additionally, the event addressed the MedFish4Ever initiative, focusing on strengthening regional cooperation to combat illegal fishing and promote Mediterranean sustainability. Further discussions are required to determine whether the policy needs broad reform or targeted adjustments.
