Proposal for menstrual leave in Cyprus proposed by Youth Parliament

The Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the 8th Youth Parliament of Cyprus has proposed the introduction of a special menstrual leave policy. The proposal suggests granting employees one to two days of leave per month, contingent upon the submission of a medical certificate. This initiative aims to address barriers to female labor market participation and combat gender inequality. Additionally, the committee recommends strengthening healthcare services by inviting specialized endocrinologists to address hormonal disorders in Cyprus. The report highlights that while Spain introduced paid menstrual leave in 2023, its implementation has been limited by social stigma and fears of professional repercussions. Sources note that fewer than 4,000 such leaves have been granted in Spain over 2.5 years, with many employees opting for general sick leave instead.
