International response to hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship MV Hondius
The cruise ship MV Hondius is at the center of an international health operation following a hantavirus outbreak that has resulted in six confirmed cases and three deaths. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is traveling to Tenerife, Spain, to coordinate the safe evacuation of passengers as the ship approaches the island. Multiple nations, including Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, the U.S., and the U.K., are organizing aircraft to repatriate their citizens. The European Union has deployed two additional planes to assist remaining European passengers, while emergency plans are being established for those from countries unable to provide their own transport. Medical experts and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) emphasize that the risk of community transmission is extremely low, as the virus requires very close contact for human-to-human spread. Current efforts remain focused on contact tracing and strict monitoring of passengers, with no signs of widespread infection reported outside the vessel's environment.
